Arthur is now Sold
During World War One many British Soldiers used to be given a little bear by their sweethearts and loved ones. These bears had eyes that were high up on their heads which peeped out of the soldiers' top pockets. This little bear is one of my versions of these Soldier Bears
Arthur Abbotts was a Soldier during WW1 and came from the village of Hampton where I now live. Ths little bear is named after him.
Arthur is 31/2 inches tall when standing and is made from a scruffy grey mohair which I have plucked, shaded, waxed and added faux stitches to so that he looks like he has been through the wars.
Arthur has odd coloured and sized brown glass eyes and a sparsely stitched nose. He is fully cotter pin jointed and is filled with kapok used in the making of early bears. He has steel shot in his body for a nice weight and comes wearing a tatty sash attached with a rusty old safety pin and a "hope" charm
