Thomas is now Sold
During World War One many British Soldiers used to be given a little bear by their sweethearts and loved ones. These bears had eyes that were high up on their heads which peeped out of the soldiers' top pockets. This little bear is one of my versions of these Soldier Bears
Thomas Malin was a Soldier during WW1 and came from the village of Hampton where I now live. Ths little bear is named after him.
On the right of the photo Thomas is the bear with blue eyes. He is one of my mini Soldier Bears standing at just 21/2 inches.I believe John Malin was his brother.
Thomas is made from golden mohair which I have aged for a "well loved" look.He has odd sized brown glass eyes and a sparsely stitched nose. He is fully cotterpin jointed and filled with kapok, used in the making of early bears. He has steel shot in his body for added weight and wears a bronze coloured charm whith the words Hope engraved.
